An important term. And a word I didn't know.
The term: pre-Islamic. The word: Jahiliyyah.
Pre-Islamic - before Year One in Islam.
Jahiliyyah - the Islamic term for all
before the advent of Islam.

I just came across a brilliant post on Facebook:

The Meccan verses of the Quran are not part of Islam because the Islamic calendar - Year One - begins with the migration of Muhammad from Mecca to Medina. The Meccan verses are therefore pre-Islamic and therefore Jahiliyyah.

It is often mentioned that the rules in the more peaceful Meccan verses are abrogated by the Medina verses. But to my knowledge, it has not been stated that they are PRE-ISLAMIC, as the Islamic calendar indicates that true Islam BEGINS with the migration.

As the peaceful verses are not part of Islam, it can be stated without hesitation that Islam is not peaceful.

Being pre-Islamic, they are Jahiliyyah.

Recognizing that only pro-violence verses in the Quran are Islamic should lead to the demotion of the religion status of Islam, something that many people have advocated.

My response, as I've already said: brilliant!

I tremendously appreciate the term, Pre-Islamic, for the time before Year One in the Islamic calendar.

I also looked up Jahiliyyah, as I wasn't familiar with the word - there are so many words to learn when one explores Islam. According to Wikipedia:

Jahiliyyah is an Islamic concept referring to the period of time and state of affairs in Arabia before the advent of Islam in 610 CE. It is often translated as the "Age of Ignorance". The term jahiliyyah is derived from the verbal root jahala "to be ignorant or stupid, to act stupidly".

I note that, in this definition, it's claimed that Islam begins 610 CE. But the move to Medina is 622 CE. In other words, the Wikipedia piece claims that Islam started in the year -12 according to Islamic dating. That's a common assumption.

Ramachandra Abhyankar's dating makes much more sense. Year One: clearly the beginning of Islam, according to the Islamic calendar. Year One: the time of the move to Medina, the time of the shift to power through violence.

In other words, yes, any rules from the Meccan verses in the Quran qualify as Jahiliyyah - pre-Islamic. Yes, they have been abrogated. But even more, by dating Islam from the time of the move to Medina, the Islamic calendar presents them as pre-Islam.

So, if anyone brings up some of the abrogated verses from the Meccan part of the Quran, we can point out that the verse is abrogated. Or here's a great new answer: Oh, that verse is PRE-ISLAMIC - FROM BEFORE ISLAM STARTED, according to the Islamic calendar.

A couple of further comments:

One. Bill Warner makes a more complex point. Though the rules in the Meccan verses are abrogated by later verses from Medina, which are better according to Islam, they can still be applied because of Islam's dualism. But of course the Medinan verses can be applied at any time, as better than the earlier ones.

Two. While the rules in the Meccan verses are pre-Islamic, pre Year One, these verses would still have validity for Islamics, as the Islamic presentation of pre-Islamic history.

I came to know about Dr. Elsa Schieder ("Elsa") through her interviews with Islam experts Robert Spencer, Bill Warner, Citizen Warrior,  and others. Many people were introduced  to Elsa through her highly informative video for children, about Islam. Through her work, Elsa has helped clear the confusion surrounding Islam, making it possible for people to learn the truth about Islam.
         Islam is just one area; Elsa has sought the truth in many areas, and has a unique talent to clarify issues and motivate people.
          I am especially indebted to Elsa for making me aware of the Islamic Doctrine of  Al-Wala Wal-Bara, which I now know to be the key for understanding Islam. Even after studying several books on Islam, I was not aware of the Islamic doctrine of Al-Wala Wal-Bara. This key doctrine is at the heart of Islam, and makes the other Islamic doctrines of Islam, like Jihad and Sharia, easily comprehensible.
          Elsa has also taught me to not give up even when confronted by obstacles, such as the now ubiquitous censorship by the media.
          Elsa is an inspiration and  an example for all seekers of truth!

When I came upon Elsa's work (like her great kid's video), I had educated myself on what Islam is, had been galvanised to protest by the horrific slaughter of children in the Manchester bombing, and was also trying to get the truth out on a lot of Facebook sites. But I felt isolated, downcast and daunted by the mountainous size of the problem. I have always been utterly anti-racist, but my friends thought I had become a bigot. I didn't know what to do. 
         Elsa's amazing, inspirational work has become a beacon of light to me, and her friendship has furnished me with the encouragement and support (and occasional rap over the knuckles!) which I desperately needed to become tougher, more confident, and much more active.
